Photo GPS Removal Guide

What photo GPS removal does

Phones and GPS-enabled cameras can store latitude, longitude, altitude, direction, timestamp, camera details, thumbnails, and editing metadata inside image files. This tool removes GPS location metadata by decoding the visible pixels in the browser and exporting a new clean image copy, which also drops the original EXIF, XMP, IPTC, thumbnail, and similar metadata containers from supported formats.

  • JPG and JPEG files download as clean JPG copies.
  • PNG files download as clean PNG copies.
  • WebP files download as clean WebP copies.
  • AVIF files download as clean WebP copies because browser AVIF export support is inconsistent.

When to remove location from a photo

Remove photo location metadata before posting images publicly, selling items from home, sharing pictures with strangers, sending travel photos, or publishing anything taken near a private address, school, workplace, hotel, clinic, or sensitive site. A missing map pin on a social site does not always prove the original file is clean, so the safer workflow is to remove GPS data, download the clean copy, and recheck the exported file before publishing.

  • Remove geotags from original phone photos before public sharing.
  • Remove location metadata from marketplace and rental listing images.
  • Remove GPS fields before sending images into client, legal, or newsroom workflows.
  • Use the EXIF Viewer tool to inspect the clean copy when verification matters.

Limits of browser GPS removal

This tool supports image formats that browsers can reliably decode and re-export, but it does not remove GPS from HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, RAW, PDF, video, Office files, animated files, or the original file in place. AVIF photos are exported as clean WebP copies, and the clean export can slightly change compression, file size, color handling, or file format. Visible addresses, landmarks, screenshots of maps, or location text printed into the pixels are not metadata and cannot be removed by GPS stripping.

  • Keep the original private if you need an archival copy.
  • Use dedicated desktop tools for unsupported formats or batch workflows.
  • Review visible image content as well as hidden metadata.
  • Recheck the downloaded clean copy before high-risk publication.
